Who takes time to sit down & listen to their children/teens read?
Do they have voice inflection, cadence, and understanding of what they read?
Do you ask them questions from the reading material?
Do you have them give you oral/written reading reports?
Don’t let your children/teens be complacent readers.
Actively engage your children when it comes to reading. Other wise, they will be surface readers.
Reading Mastery is So Much More than Calling Out Words.
What is the reading material the children scores are based on?
Who will teach tools & techniques to reading mastery? Figurative Language, Author’s Intent, Inferences, Context Clues, Prefixes, Root Words, Suffixes, Close Reading, etc.?
Children are held accountable for scores on standardized tests & most times, it is not certain if they have been given the reading tools & techniques in detail.
Look into the records of the students, those low scores didn’t come out of the middle of nowhere. The reading struggling didn’t just pop out the ground.
Most times, children are given boring reading material, and they are expected to be hyped up about it.
What do they have a passion for? That is the key to unlock mediocre reading scores.
The brain is a muscle & it must be constantly exercised. If not, it gets out of shape. Flabby.
Poems, Song Lyrics, Quotes, Proverbs, Short Essays, etc are very powerful when it comes to students mastering reading. Break the class down in a circle or semi-circle & let the students read out loud. Some will read better than others. Students will laugh. At first. But, the teacher or reading coach must say, “don’t laugh too quick, because all of you are going to have to read aloud. We are going around the circle.”
See how long the laughing last. That is going to be knocked off real quick.
Some of the fast readers might not comprehend as well as the slow readers. In that case, the fast readers are more of an entertainer. Sometimes, the slow readers comprehend better than the speedy rabbit readers.
Everybody will read the same text in the circle. Nobody knows if they will be called next. You think they are going to goof off? Nope. Too much embarrassment, if they are caught looking out the window at squirrels or something. They will pay attention.
The teacher/parent/reading coach must know the material inside out & outside in. That way, they will be able to ask questions right on the spot or after a student gets through reading.
Anyone can answer the question asked. The more these type settings happen, the more young people are inspired to be master readers.
Some days, you go over prefixes, suffixes & root words. Etymology. The origin of words.
Go over Greek & Latin, French, Old English, Spanish. Then, they will have a solid understanding of the core of the English Language.
Have the Youth Breakdown Poems & Song Lyrics. Ask them about the stories in the poems & songs & ask them have they had similar experiences.
Reading Mastery is no Cookie Cutter Template. It takes hardwork to see a rise in Reading Scores. It takes sacrifice on students & the adults part.
Who is willing to turn the difficult soil over?

4,5,6 year olds doing Algebra & Geometry & Reading 2-3 Grade Levels Above & Teenagers Learning Trades gets less Attention from Adults than a Pro Sports Game or Music Awards Night or Reality Show or Holidays where Adults can Barbeque & Play Music & have A Good Time.
While all that go on, children & teens are getting their confidence broken in classrooms, not understanding math word problems, not doing well in standardized tests, not able to relate their education to the real world, can’t explain math steps on the board in front of the class, not really understanding their homework, and many things that don’t have their parents full attention.
Children & Teens are exposed to material much earlier than previous generations. Many are getting very frustrated with school.
Without trades, even honor roll students will be at a disadvantage. Only reason I bring up honor roll students is because most people think they good to go with great grades. Without trade knowledge, they too are at a disadvantage.
Trades. What can you use your mind & hands to invent, create, build, manufacture & produce?

Are you fine with them only having book knowledge knowledge?
Are you fine with them not having a trade or trades & not being able to use their minds & hands to create, invent, manufacture & produce?
Are you fine with them not being able to apply their education to the real world?
We should strive to be Fans of Youth Education.
Throw some youth think tank parties, tailgate & throw some barbecue chicken, hamburgers, hotdogs on the grill with drinks & play some good music.
Lets get excited in the barbershops & beauty salons & neighborhoods & homes & everywhere else about youth education & trades & black history & technology.
Bring the children. Have Multiplication Superbowls, Spelling Bee Superbowls, Reading, Math & Science Superbowls.
Lets have some fun…lets play, lets play Youth Educational Challenge Championships.
