(((Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song)))

…back in 1971. The book is a memoir, looking back at the movie making period. In the back is the script.

At one time Melvin was homeless in France. This was right after his independent films were a big hit with the French after they were screened.

Struggle…Something about struggle & hardship, no school can compete wt. Successful people not made overnight. Instant success has no staying power. Because it is like a Mirage in the desert. It ain’t real. Melvin couldn’t get a job in Hollywood as a writer or Film Maker. They did tell him he could be a janitor.

He wrote a book of his observations as a Streetcar driver in San Francisco. He hooked up wt a Photographer and Published a book. It was only a short period later he was fired. A friend told him his book was a movie. So he started the long, hard journey into film making. Self-taught. He made a few films.

Along the same time, his marriage started falling apart. Got divorced and decided to go back to school over in Europe on his GI Bill. Before he left, a Guy stopped by his house and asked him could he show his films in film festivals. Melvin agreed to it and went on to school over in Europe. While in School, the guy showed his films along wt others across Europe.

Melvin’s Films became a big hit wt the French people. They had a big showing of his film and invited him to come. He came and was a standing ovation……Then, he fell on hard times in France. Real Hard times. At one Point he was homeless. But, his boyhood days of selling wares and various items to homeless people in Chicago served him well in these very difficult times. He had setup shop among the homeless as a little boy, selling various items to homeless people for a cheap price. Melvin had a great business mind, even as a little boy. His daddy encouraged him and told him the importance of having all kind of hustles while a boy in Chicago. Melvin always had money in his pockets, even as a little boy–hardwork and grinding to make his goals a reality……during this time, while in France, homeless, he was learning French Language and he was always sharp and picked up fast.
He learned French so well, he became a journalist. A very good French journalist. He also learned if he was a journalist, he could put in for a Film Maker’s Grant. He put in for it and got a Big Grant. Now, he was really able to make movies the way he wanted to wt The Right Equipment. He got so good at it, America was having a Film Festival in California. France sent him as their best Representative.

The Rest is History Folks. He Kicked Down the Doors of Hollywood. Now, they started in after him. He did Watermelon Man wt Hollywood. Saved the Money from That & Bill Cosby Loaned him $50,000 and Melvin made his Own Movie and Became a Multi-Millionaire.

Spoken Word Piece in Honor of Wise Black Men Mentors (Fire Spittas) in My Life…

Black Boys & Young Men Must Have Mentors.

Mentors (Fire Spittas) are Older Men in Our Communities that Keep It Real. That Break The Real from The UnReal Down.

They might not even have a High School Diploma or College Degree, but just Might be some of the Smartest & Realist Men We Ever Met.

Young Brothers got to seek them out & Mothers or Women got to Love the Young Brothers enough or see the importance of connecting the young brothers with the older Fire Spittas…Keep It Real Brothers.

This will put some type of balance in the young brothers minds. When confronted with tough situations, when backs are pushed up against the wall, they will learn how to think through these times in another platform than how they might have come up around when fathers are gone and many times they hear a lot of yelling or emotional responses.

Hook the Older Fire Spitting Brothers up with the Young Lions.

2 Major things happen when Young Brothers Linked wt Fire Spittas….there will be less Young Brothers Killing Each Other & Feminine Ways in Brothers will start to Diminish.

Believe it or Not, Emotionalism & quick pop off of the mouths in heated situations sometimes cause killings of young brothers among each other. A lot of huffed up talk that ain’t going to amount to much but the other brother getting intimadated by words in a heated conversation….Wolf Talking or Talking Big, but might not be able to do that much technically wt the hands–so guns start popping.

Hook the young brothers up wt older guys wt trades, always doing something productive & producing something or manufacturing something on their own terms. The (Fire Spittas) got plenty to share wt the young lions to calm them down. Getting their minds focused & productive.

So-Called “Bad Children ”
–Part 3

When I became a Teacher, I worked wt Teen Guys other Teachers could not do anything wt…Gang Members, been to jail, prison, dropouts, etc…

I found out very quick–shirt & tie & hard bottom shoes was not to be my attire. Combat Boots, T-Shirt & Jeans. Found that out my 1st week of Teaching, right out of College.

Young Brother told me “Awe Turner, you talking all that positive shit, we’ll come up there & kick yo ass.”

It was like something went off in my head. Mind you now, I’m in shirt & tie, hard bottoms, not sitting in my desk giving out worksheets…on the board, giving real talks, not sugarcoating reality.

I told “Harrison” & his crew of 3, he made 4, well let’s take it outside. The whole class got in an uproar as we walked out. They wanted see that action. I told them “sit y’all behind down” & told my assistant, Miss Rogers, “I’ll be back. Keep the class working.”

The guys behind me mumbling…as I walked out. Not wt my back turned, but sort of a sideways walk out the class door.

We went under this Oak Tree. I said to Harrison, “In the class, you said “Awe Turner, ain’t nobody won’t to hear all of that positive shit, we’ll come up there & kick yo ass.” I went on “evidently, you the leader, since you spoke for them.” Before I got the last word out my mouth, another guy said “dat nigger ain’t no motherfucking leader.”

I said “if he is or not, look what this crap done came to…5 black men under this oak tree about to battle, damn all the talk. The whole world say we ain’t shit, the school board call me everyday, saying if you can’t do anything wt em, they out the school for good. We got a chance to make the whole world out a lie. But, y’all want to fight me, and I don’t want nothing but the best for you….damn all the talk…since y’all going to whip my ass, y’all might as well get started.”

I got in my fight stance…just like my Father taught me since a little boy. He always taught me, go to work on 1 real good, if out numbered. Walking out the class, I already knew what I was gonna do…take Harrison Knee Cap out. The hands and fight stance was just diversionary tactics….fast forward.

As soon as I dropped in Fight Stance, Harrison said…man, Mr. Turner, you supposed to be our teacher, how you gon sit there & want to fight us?”

Well, I’ll be damn…what the hell?…all 5 of us looking crazy.

Silence…”could hear a rat piss on carpet”, like my aunt used to say.

I broke the silence & said….”man, let’s go over here & sit down & talk fellows.”

Before we sat down under the tree, I went back in the class and dismissed class for the day. It was about.1:30 pm…the class went from 12:30-3:30 pm.

We talked under that oak tree until 2:30…then, went back in the class, talked some more…and they asked me to go over some of that Math Board Work I had been trying to go over at the start of class.

I didn’t have any more trouble out them fellows. When new students came in the class like them, they checked them before I did…sometimes saying, “look playa, we ain’t wt that stuff in here…people already say we ain’t gon be nothing in the world. This man real, you got to come in here & get it playa (GED)..,or take that crap somewhere else.”

Great Old School Music

Great Old School Music brings whole movies worth of memories back to our minds.

OLD SCHOOL MUSIC had Profound Lyrics. Words that had meaning. Words that were Relevant Then & Now. Timeless Music.

Unfortunately, much of the Music we hear today is 3 word songs. Hook Filled Songs. Songs based on an Instant Grit Society.

You know Old School Music is Great when teens can hear It & Rock with It. Some even make mixed tapes from the Old School album crate. Some Beat Makers chop & dice the Old School Music and put samples in the New School Music.

Yes, 1 Song has the ability to transcend time back to special places in our hearts & minds.
