“Cross-Training” by W. B. Ward

image

Me and my Pops

Chess is a thinking man’s game. Not to be taking lightly at all. There are accounts on record of a single game being played over a 24 hour period. One player took 16 hours to make one move.

My pops always taught me to be a thinker. We’ve played this very game since I was at least 3 years old. Not quite understanding all of it at the time, as I grew older, the whippings began after I learned the rules.

The cross-training this game offers, if applied in life, is the mastery of the “rules of engagement.”

“Always have backup in place before you make a move.”

Many of you may have heard people say that in chess you have to think about three or four moves ahead of your opposition, and many of the greats will say it has to be even more moves, in order to counter the attack from your opponent.

Now in the real world we will encounter pit falls if we are not expecting them. This is what it means to be truly prepared, to expect the attack and have backup in place to replace quickly what was lost.

Lessons passed down through years and years, countless hours and hours, around kitchen tables mastering this game. The Game of Life, chess is only the vehicle.

They say a picture is worth 1000 words, I just shared a few.

Peace.

We got to move toward bringing reality into play. TV, Reality Shows, Trapp Music, Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous, Pro Sports Player Stories of Riches & Fame…Keep Minds Distracted from Reality. How many people do we really know got real big paper $$$$ like that?

Just the very thought of coming up on some paper like that distract us. Movie Star reaching, fashion fame reaching, comedy, reality shows, entertainment–all that fine. But, we got to unify on real issues. Issues we can really bring into reality together. All of us got something to bring to the overall work.

I only hope some people read the 7 posts dropped in the Link Below. If not, at least let the Youth Read them. Have them give you Book Reports. Oral & Written.

These posts and others going inspire them to look below mere surface level school reading & tv unreality.

The Youth…they are our future. They ain’t caught up yet in the daily grind of providing for themselves & their own families full swing yet.

Let them break down the 7 posts below.

They reading a lot of Yankee Doodle Dandy, Middle Age Europe History, History of Rock & Roll.

As the Youth Read through the material and break it down in book reports…oral and written, you all going to have talking points to chop up it up on real productive conversations.

Try It and see.

—->>> Got that Goodie Mobb Pumping in my earphones. Yep, up before the birds start to sing, on this knowledge thing. Forget bling bling, lifting minds out mental slings.

Message to The Black Youth—“Be A Star That Stands the Test of Time”—Part 1

image

When I look into your eyes Black Youth, I see a gleam in them. You have your Youth, your energy, your belief that something great awaits you as you become adults. When you are young—you believe you will one day be somebody great. You watch comedy, sports, music videos, and many other things, and envision yourselves as being as as you see & hear.

Many of you want to be a singer, a rapper, a comedian, a fashion model, an actor, etc.

For years, you wait to cut a demo as a musician, or spend thousands of dollars on comp cards as a model, photo shoots, and modeling classes.

There are many superstars in school sports waiting for a football, volleyball, basketball, softball scholarship—and, most times not pushed toward academic excellence by coaches, parents, and teachers the same way.

When will black youth have a common goal or be presented with heroes and sheroes that did something great for us and loved us… people like Ida B. Wells, T. Thomas Fortune, Elijah Muhammad, W.E.B. Dubois, Mary McCleod Bethune, The Last Poets, Gil Scott-Heron, Lucy Laney, Mary Church Terrell, John Henrik Clarke, John G. Jackson, and the likes. Here are only a few of names of great people that loved us . What makes these giants so much more different than the ones our youth are given in Feburary during Black History Month—is they dedicated their entire lives to our rise as a people.

A lot of our ancestors mission for our betterment was almost a priesthood. In other words, we consumed their every waking thoughts. You need to know of them so you can be inspired to be somebody. Not somebody that will serve only to make our people more of a consumer by selling records, going to concerts, a sports game, movie to see you on the big screen.

When your dreams of being a singer, dancer, comedian, actor, athlete, fashion model, talk show host, etc…Don’t meet your expectations, where will you go from there? Will you still have your energy and belief you will be somebody?

Well, I am here to tell you now Beautiful Black Youth of Today & Tomorrow—a whole world awaits you.

You can be somebody. You can give the world a beautiful light to see. You have brilliant minds. That is the way God created you. You have talents hidden deep within you that are be explored and dug up like gold.

You, Beautiful Black Youth, can be somebody great—not only as a singer, fashion model, NBA Player, comedian, talk show host. You do not have to be an entertainer, made to make someone laugh, clap, make another dunk in a basketball goal, hit another homerun in baseball. You can be great even if you do not sing a hit song. Do not give up if you see these goals not coming your way.

You must continue the great legacy set for our people. Take all of your energy and study our Great Freedom Fighting Ancestors. There are so many great ones not given to you like Henry McNeil Turner, Ida B. Wells, Nzinga, Elijah Muhammad, Yaa Asantewaa, Granny Nanny, Harriet Tubman, Martin Delaney, and many others. When you study them, you will see how you can give your God-given talents to our people. That is a life long mission. It will make you “A Star in the Universe” that will shine forever.

Give the world the light within you.

Pops, Me & My Sis Bout to Go Catch Some Fishes Out Dem Dare Ponds in Da Country

image

Pops, Me & My Sis bout to go catch some fishes out dem dare ponds in da country.

When we comes back, we cleans em real good. Cut da fish headz off & guts em. You know. Throws da fish headz to da catz. Once we gets em cleaned up, we takes da fishes in da house. By den, daddy be done had dat grease real hot. And he gots dem grits cooking with cheese in it. Mustard & ketchup ready. You talkin bout some good eating. Man, you got to take ya shoes off & wiggle ya toes while you eat dat kinda Deep South Cooking.

Peep this…at night when it was hard seeing the fishing rod duck down when fish bit the bait–my father had a master plan for that. You know baby shoe bells. He used them. Tied them to the tip of the fishing rods, where the hole is, where the line go through. He tied the bell on the rod tip wt bread wrappers. We might be down a railroad track, checking lines tied to the tracks, trees, etc. Just lines & hooks wt bait. But we had other rods out too. When a fish hit them, the bells went off.

Sometimes, the fish bit the bait one after another or at the same time. It sounded like Christmas bells going off. DADDY WOULD SAY…”that’s what I’m talking bout….get ready lil fish, y’all getting fried up tonight….yes Sir Son, that’s what I’m talking bout.”

We Must Prepare Our Youth to Face The World

What better time to help children & teens develop trades than while they still stay home? When they leave home, & get caught up in the grind of adult living full swing, they might not have the money or time or both to learn a trade. We must find out things our young people have a passion for. Not Sports & Entertainment now. I am not driving at that. We must make sure our young people have solid skills. Make sure they can build something. Produce something. Manufacture something. Invent something. Use their hands & minds to the fullest to make a way for themselves & their eventual families.

Jobs are becoming harder & harder to come by. Many factories are closing down or going overseas, where labor is cheaper. The cost of living is going up.

We have to take a more active approach to our future. Our youth is our future. If we fail them, we fail ourselves.

Everyone is not going to college. Might not have the means or time to do so. But there are other ways to learn trades, skills, crafts, etc….A few ways:

Hook up with an older person in the community that has mastered a certain trade, craft, skill.

Try to get them to take the young person under their wings.

Mentorship/Apprenticeship.

Buy books for the young people so they can read up on trades, crafts, skills (How-to books). Something they might be interested in. Something they like or lean toward.

Take the young people to craft & hobby stores or take them to workshops on trades.

We have to take an active approach for the development of our young people. Get them use to reading articles & magazines in various trades and things they might be interested in.

A good plumber, clothing designer, carpenter, mechanic, graphic artist, audio engineer, tile layer, barber, AC & Heating Repair, hairdresser, brick mason, etc…has great value in our communities.

Common Core Math–A Deeper Look.

Common Core Math is a lot of Word Problems and Real World Problems. The long wording has to be stripped down to look at what is really being asked.

Once words turned into correct mathematical symbols & correct methods of solving problems, we on the move toward solutions with expediency.

Our children are faced with Common Core Math. We must as parents & adults go in on it and get to the real deal, making Math the Beautiful & Powerful Subject that it is…A Builder, Producer & Manufacture Tool.

Common Core Math presentation is long & boring. That’s for sure. The children are almost forced to do the math this way. Sometimes, they get points knocked off for doing math the most proficient & economical way.

The Youth must have defenders for right. There are numerous ways to approach problems & come up with solutions. Parents & Adults must stand firm on what’s right.

The teachers and administrators are, in many ways, locked into the writers of Common Core Books & Tests. What do I mean by that? The Administration tell the Teachers you are going to use these long winded, boring books. Then, they bring in so-called “Math Experts” on Common Core Math Methods. Never mind all the successful years a math teacher might have with a proven track record.

The Common Core Math Books are very expensive for parents. Many of the books don’t even have a answer key in the back. You have to buy that separate. More money.

It is becoming more difficult for parents to even help their children with math homework, based on what they used to learning, back in the day.

Once parents and adults really look at the problems and get a feel of the Common Core Math, they can break it down in old school ways. But, it takes work on the parents and adults part as well.

Be Aggressive for Knowledge

Don’t misjudge the quality of knowledge you can acquire. You might not have the money to go to college. Some of the world’s greatest men & women burned the midnight oil.

Be aggressive for knowledge, especially things you have a passion for. Buy books, search the on internet, go to workshops, talk to people with knowledge. Reach for knowledge, & work for it. It will work for you.
